BRUSH has completed a £5m (US $7.1m) investment in its UK production hub to allow it to manufacture large 132kV transformers.

The upgrade, which includes improved testing and manufacturing facilities, means BRUSH Transformers customers will also benefit from up to 20% shorter lead times.

BRUSH transformers are used across the world in markets including utilities, oil, petrochemical, coal, steel and rail. In the UK customers include Eon, Scottish Power, Tamesis and Network Rail.

As part of the £5m investment, BRUSH has installed new manufacturing capacity of 5,100 MVA at its Loughborough site, with the potential for this to be increased to 6,900 MVA in the future.

The firm has also invested significantly in its research and development facility for transformers, with new enclosures created for testing BRUSH’s low-noise units. Other improvements include increased lifting capabilities of 97.5 tonnes and upgraded oil processing plants.

Simon Thomas, managing director for transformers at BRUSH, said: “This is a major upgrade at our UK manufacturing hub and is the latest significant investment we have made to keep ahead of the market and meet the evolving needs of our customers.

“There is increasing demand for large transformers from a range of industries ranging from energy to transport. With this development customers can for the first time access 132kV BRUSH transformers manufactured and delivered in the UK.

“The investment also means our transformers will be delivered quicker, with lead times cut by up to a fifth. Our ongoing R&D work, meanwhile, will help ensure our products emit among the lowest noise levels in the market.”

BRUSH has the capabilities for the design, manufacture, testing and installation of a wide range of transformers, including power transformers, furnace transformers, series reactors, auto transformers and special transformers.
