Texas A&M University recently commissioned their new Combined Heat & Power plant (CHP) which has a total capacity of 45MW comprising a gas turbine driven main generator and utilizing captured waste combustion heat, a 10MW steam turbine generator.
The main gas turbine package includes a 34 MegaWatt BRUSH BDAX71-193ERH water cooled generator driven by the GE Aero LM2500+G4 type gas turbine, which supports more than 60% of the university’s overall electrical energy demand.

Steam from the power plant is used for either cooling or heating 19 Mil square feet of buildings depending on the season and facility operations.
Compared to the previous 38 year old steam and electric generation facility the new $73 Million (capital cost) natural gas fueled plant will significantly improve the operations for both steam and electric production and reduce air emissions and the campus carbon footprint.
TAMU first opened in 1876 as the Texas Agricultural and Mechanical College and is now the sixth largest university in the US; located on a 5,500-acre campus in central Texas in the Bryan - College Station township. The BRUSH DAX71-193 generator is from the range of turbo generators produced for both 50 & 60Hz gas and steam turbine drivers. Available in direct air, totally enclosed air and totally enclosed water cooled, they are in service in all industrial, utility and petrochemical applications including shipboard and offshore production facilities.
