Looking to the future

As we move into 2024, BRUSH CEO, Nicolas Pitrat, shares his thoughts of what’s to come…

As a business that looks to the future, whether that’s by securing our supply chain or by investing in new capabilities – progress is always at our core.

And it is with our eyes firmly set on the future that we enter 2024.

But let’s be in no doubt, the future does hold challenges. The energy management landscape is changing at an unprecedented pace; to keep up, we must adapt.

And that is exactly what we’ve done.

While we still manufacture the engineered products we’ve built our name on, our offering has grown and we now provide complete end-to-end engineering solutions – from project concept through to design and build.

Delivered through our Group businesses – Poise, KUS Power Engineering, Aprenda and Eta Projects Ltd, we support our customers at every stage of their project, making us a truly a one-stop engineering shop – expect to hear more on this in the months ahead!

And I’m pleased to say that the addition of our engineering businesses has seen our Group grow and we welcome many new colleagues into the BRUSH family. And, as you would expect of us, we’ve committed to the future, with our biggest intake of apprentices in almost a decade.

So, what else can you expect from BRUSH in 2024? Well, we will continue to support the drive to net zero as well as to focus on product innovation, including the latest addition to our switchgear portfolio, CRYNO, and our adaptive substation solution, PowerSub.

2024 will also see us to continue to work in partnership with our customers across the UK, a commitment underscored by the opening of a new base in Scotland which will help us to pre-empt the needs of customers across the region.

As we step forward into 2024, the enthusiasm and energy flowing across our business right now is truly inspiring and I, along with the rest of the BRUSH team, cannot wait to see what 2024 has to offer.

BRUSH acquires European transformer windings specialist Co.Bo.T

In line with our ambitious growth strategy, we are pleased to confirm an exciting new addition to the BRUSH portfolio – renowned European transformer windings specialist Co.Bo.T srl.

Allowing us to secure a vital link in our supply chain and create extra production capacity to support the expansion of the UK electricity grid for years to come, the acquisition of Co.Bo.T also has the potential to optimise lead-times for BRUSH customers who are keen to connect to the grid.

Based near Vicenza in Northern Italy, Co.Bo.T supplies major transformer manufacturers across Western Europe – including BRUSH – and has built a strong reputation as a winding specialist in the 33kV-132kV bracket.

Nicolas Pitrat, CEO of BRUSH Group, said: “I’m very excited to welcome Co.Bo.T to the BRUSH family. Their impressive skills and expertise will not only help boost our supply chain, but in joining the Group they will further enhance our comprehensive solutions offering, ensuring we can support our customers every step of the way. Our strategic partnership with Co.Bo.T, combined with our investment into state-of-the-art testing facilities at our Loughborough facility, significantly increases our production capability while maintaining our renowned transformer quality.”

Davide Cornale, Managing Director of Co.Bo.T, said: “Having worked as a key supplier to BRUSH for many years, we are delighted to have the opportunity to become part of the Group. I am proud of what we have achieved over the past 30 years and the deal with BRUSH is a testament to the team’s expertise, the quality of our work and the high level of service we offer – that will continue in the future.”

As part of BRUSH Group, Co.Bo.T will remain a standalone business, continuing ‘business as usual’ and offering its transformer winding and assembly services to the whole industry, with all contracts with existing customers honoured under the new ownership.

The acquisition of Co.Bo.T is the latest in a series of complementary deals made by BRUSH Group which reinforce our position as a leading provider of energy management solutions.

Overview

BRUSH is a local employer with a rich history of recruiting and developing apprentices to work on engineered solutions that are designed, built and delivered in the UK.

We’re a Platinum Partner with Loughborough College and maintain an excellent relationship with Coleg Gwent  in South Wales, with whom we’ve delivered quality apprenticeships in Engineering, Manufacturing and other business-related disciplines for many years.

Evidence of how effective apprenticeships are at developing talent can be found in the number of employees currently working in a variety of roles with us, who began their careers as BRUSH apprentices. Read about a few of them below.

Be vital to our future

Apprenticeships are a major focus for BRUSH going forwards. That’s because to succeed now and in the future, we need a strong pipeline of skilled and talented people who will be educated and trained to help drive our future growth and ensure we’re ready  to meet future challenges.

We all know there’s a national skills shortage, particularly in Engineering, Services and Production. Add to that a rapidly ageing workforce and it’s clear to see why we attach so much importance to developing our own talent through the provision of apprenticeships.

What our people say about apprenticeships at BRUSH

Careers

Meet Ashley

“If you’re a good apprentice here, you’ll learn your trade. And if you get good at your trade, there are amazing jobs here for you.”

Meet Ashley, one of our mentors of the apprentices at BRUSH Switchgear in Wales. He’s been with the business for 49 years, having joined as an apprentice himself. He is now an Aftermarket Product Engineer.

Ashley has played a key role in the development of so many apprentices during his long career with BRUSH, always driven by his desire to act with thoughtfulness and kindness towards every individual. And it’s an approach that’s proven to succeed.

“There’s an element of pride in seeing people you’ve mentored as apprentices become successful managers,” he says. “Because I know I’ve had a little bit of input in their development.”

His apprentices would actually say Ashley’s impact on their careers has been far greater than that, with many stating they’ve never forgotten his advice and opinions.

“I see my role as helping to ensure apprentices understand the business,” says Ashley. “Because the more knowledge they attain at this level, the more they can take forward into the business, and that will help BRUSH when they eventually move into new and different roles.”

Careers

Meet Emma

“On an apprenticeship, you’re earning while you’re learning. I can’t see why anyone would say ‘no’ to an apprenticeship at BRUSH if it’s a field they’re interested in.”

Meet Emma, a former BRUSH apprentice who currently works in the services department as a Contract Engineer. “It’s like a project management role,” she says. “I’m dealing with customers directly, as I manage orders from intake through to completion.”

Emma enjoyed school but dropped out of college to get a job. Her father worked in Switchgear at BRUSH and asked her if she was interested in an apprenticeship. “I looked at what BRUSH offered and thought: this is interesting. It was a chance to learn, get qualifications and hands-on experience in a job while getting paid. It was a win-win!”

She finished her four-year apprenticeship in 2013, having worked her way around different departments including Engineering, Purchasing and finally Servicing. “That’s where I discovered I wanted to be, liaising with customers and managing projects. Dealing with customers direct really interests me.”

As for the future, Emma has her sights set on a supervisory or managerial position at BRUSH. And she knows her apprenticeship has given her the foundation and experience to help her achieve that goal.

Careers

Meet Justin

“If it’s grey and it hums, we’ll work on it!” That’s how former BRUSH apprentice Justin describes his current role with us, which covers transformer installation, maintenance, upgrades and repairs.”

Meet Justin, a Field Services Manager for BRUSH Transformers. He started his four-year BRUSH apprenticeship straight from school in 2001, “fresh faced with the David Beckham Real Madrid-era look,” as he puts it!

Having always liked engineering, drawing and creating things, when an opportunity for an apprenticeship at BRUSH came along, Justin jumped at the chance.

He spent three years working on transformers, with a short secondment in Abu Dhabi. Having always wanted to be paid to draw and after helping set up our drawing office in the Middle East, on his return he was told about a similar role here in the UK. “I went through the interview process and the rest is history,” he says.

Justin is a great believer in the power and importance of apprenticeships: “They give you confidence, belief and the chance to grow personally. I’d definitely recommend an apprenticeship to anyone, and have done to my 21-year-old brother. And apprenticeships at BRUSH give you the chance to work on technology that’s designed, built and delivered in the UK, which is very rare in the industry.”

Justin’s appreciation of apprenticeships at BRUSH is music to the ears of Martin, who helped mentor Justin throughout his apprenticeship. You can view Martin’s profile here.

Careers

Meet Martin

“If you’re into engineering and want to do an apprenticeship, come to BRUSH. People know the name. It has history, which means the company is trusted and has been trusted for years.”

Meet Martin, Tap Change Service Manager here at BRUSH. As he explains, “A tap changer bolts onto the end of a transformer and allows customers to alter the voltage.” Martin’s been in his current role since 2019 but actually started at BRUSH back in 1985 as an apprentice.

“My apprenticeship here has enabled me to see the world during my career. I’ve been to the Middle East (ten times), India, Poland, Indonesia, Singapore, everywhere!”

No wonder he’s a big believer in apprenticeships at BRUSH: “They set you up for life, basically, giving you a good grounding in the business. They also further your education and get you started in life.”

Since his own apprenticeship, Martin has played a key role in mentoring others, including Justin who is now in a managerial role himself (you can view his profile here)

As Martin says: “Here at BRUSH, you’ll learn actual skills on the job while getting paid. And you’ll get to learn technical skills at college. Both aspects marry well together. It’s a brilliant way to do it. I highly recommend BRUSH apprenticeships!”
